mountaineering & alpine climbing course

Do you want to explore the mountains and glaciers? take a course and be safe in the mountains. 

It never hurts to learn more. This day course goes into rope work, what equipment you need for the high mountains, glacier travel /rescue and climbing techniques.  

  

We start at Sólheimajökull glacier that is an outlet glacier based on the south coast of Iceland.  

the day is set up this way: 

A good way to start the day is going over crampons techniques , how to walk probably on the crampons and how you use them to climb. 

next we go over rope work, how to walk on roped team, like when you travel on the high glaciers in the mountains, how do you use them and when, how to tigh into a rope. 

anchor’s, how to put them up, different types of anchors and what gear do you need to make an anchor.  

self-rescue how to get yourself out of a crevasse, on a roped team. what gear you need and how to use it.  

ice climbing.  We are going to teach you the basic ice climbing skills to move in the mountains.  

  

This is a day course, so we don’t expect you to become a professional guide after one day. This is more to give you the understanding of different aspects of things you need to know if you are aiming to spend some time in the mountains.

You Bring:

  • Warm cloths:
    • Rain gear pants and jacket
    • Down or primaloft jacket (can be nice on lunch brake)
  • Good hiking shoes
  • Hat and gloves
  • 30-40L  backpack
  • Food and water for the day
  • Sunglasses

You can rent some of this gear from us if you don’t have it.

About the weather in Iceland
Weather in Iceland can change fast so if the weather is not good for this hike day we may have to cancel this trip or we can move the hike to the next day if that is better.
