Tindfjallajökull Hike

Ýmir & Ýma

About the tour

Tindfjallajökull is a perfect glacier hike for people that want a nice day of hiking on the high glacier this glacier is not over crowded so this is an excellent place. The hike takes 5-7 hours.

We start the day in Hvolsvöllur, if you get there by yourself we are going to leave your car at N1 gas station. We need to take a jeep up to the mountains. It depends on conditions in the mountains how far we can drive. Our next part is 40-70 min drive in to the mountains, it depends on the road how long this drive is. After getting up the first hills on the jeep the hiking starts. We will start with going over the day plan, this plan can change over the weeks due to snow fall.

The hike starts with gravel and snow around 900 meters. First point is going to be the mountain Saxi small rock reef that is fun to climb. This also is a good place to have some drinks and water.

After Saxi we step on the glacier itself. From this point we can see the summit Ýmir 1446 meters. The glacier hike is pretty flat and easy, from the start of the glacier to the summit slope take about 1-2 hours. The summit slope is the steepest part of the hike but it’s not technical. From the summit we have two options, we can hike to the neighbour peak Ýma 1448m or start the hike back to the jeep.

On a clear day the view from the summit is amazing you can see in to the valley Þórsmörk and the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull that erupted 2010. To the south you can see over to Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). This is one of the most stunning area in Iceland. The view on the summits amazing you can see in to the valley Þórsmörk and the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull that erupted 2010. And in the south you can see south coast and Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands).
