Hrútfjallstindar Hike

1875m

About the tour

Hrútfjallstindar is a magnificent mountain with four peaks. They rise from 1756 to 1875meters above sea level and they give you a big alpine feeling, all around you have big peaks and massive outlet glaciers.

This is not the tallest peak in the country but its one of the most spectacular one. Hrútfjallstindar are located on the south edge of Vatnajökull glacier the biggest glacier in Europe.

Hiking up to the peak is not a technical climb but it requires good stamina, hiking time is from 12-16 hours depends on conditions.

We are going to start early in the morning at Hafrafell. This mountain is an easy hike on rocks and gravel and takes us to 960meters. This is also a good place to have some snacks and water.

After some rest we descend down Sveltiskarð before we get to the edge of the glacier. At the base of the glacier we put on the glacier equipment and start the glacier hike to the summits.

We take the same route back down the mountain.

For those who want a more extreme tour we also offer a climbing tour up the south face of the mountain.

For more info on this tour send us a mail or give us a call.

It‘s nice to take 3 days to do this hike,

Day 1: Drive to Skaftafell
Day 2: Summit day 12-16 hours
Day 3: Sleep, recover and drive back. We don’t recommend to drive back to Reykjavík the same day as the hike is.
